ENERGIES

Letter from the Editor-in-Chief (Winter 2023)

With this issue of ENERGIES Magazine, US Energy Media celebrates two years of publication. The magazine’s premiere issue was released in Spring 2022 and featured a cover story interview with Abigail Ross Hopper, the CEO of the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA). Since then, the quarterly publication has featured C-suite executives representing various sectors of the renewable energy industry, including solar, wind, carbon capture and storage… and one Academy award winning actor and environmental activist, Jeff Bridges.

For the first time, this issue features a cover interview with an executive in the electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing sector. Senior writer and contributor, Nick Vaccaro, talks to Rob Threlkeld, Director of Global Energy Strategy at General Motors, about GM’s carbon neutrality goal by 2040, as well as his personal efforts to reduce his carbon footprint. Threlkeld believes every citizen is responsible for ensuring that the energy transition succeeds.

Personal responsibility and collective action are recurring themes in this issue as Emmy nominated actor and longtime environmental activist, Ed Begley, Jr., reflects on the progress we have made on environmental issues since the first Earth Day in 1970, which is of special significance to him, and the work yet to be done, along with how each of us can make a difference. In the excerpt from his newly released memoir, he reminisces about his friendship with Maron Brando (whom the Washington Post referred to as a “mad scientist” in its excerpt from Begley’s memoir) and their brainstorming sessions to find sustainable solutions to some of the problems facing the Earth.

You’ll also read about how the current Miss America, Grace Stanke, has used her platform to promote greater use of nuclear energy; a new utility scale solar facility in Pennsylvania that has created a unique initiative to help low- and limited-income households in that state; eliminating EV charging queue chaos, and more.

Happy holidays! We look forward to bringing you more of these stories – and solutions – in the coming new year.
